Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane does have a release clause in his contract that could pave the way for a future return to England, according to a new report by Matt Law, a prominent journalist for The Daily Telegraph.
While sources close to Kane have not commented on a specific report in Bild, The Daily Telegraph understands that such a clause does exist in Kane’s contract with Bayern. The clause allows Kane to leave Bayern at a specified time for an agreed amount of money. However, Kane is so happy with life in Germany at the moment that he is not considering activating the clause any time soon.
Premier League clubs are aware of the existence of a release clause in Kane’s contract, which could be crucial to his potential return to England. Kane joined Bayern from Tottenham for a fee of £100m in August 2023 and signed a four-year contract. As part of the transfer, Spurs have been given the right of first refusal, but this only applies if Bayern agree to sell Kane and he wants to return to Spurs.
It means that if another rival triggers Bayern’s release clause, Spurs will have to decide whether to make an offer for Kane and hope the 31-year-old would prefer to return to north London. However, there is no specific monetary limit to the right to match and Spurs would still have to trigger Kane’s release clause or negotiate a fee with Bayern for Kane.
With Manchester City already having Haaland and Newcastle having Isaac, the most likely destination for Kane’s return to the Premier League is Manchester United, rather than Chelsea or even Arsenal, according to the report. Kane can not only bring United goals but also provide the leadership the team needs. This time, United will not have to deal with the difficult negotiations with Tottenham chairman Levy.
However, it is not expected that United will wait until January to make a move, they will need to start trying this summer. With the World Cup on the horizon next year, Kane will certainly not want to be distracted by transfer matters, so an agreement must be reached sooner rather than later. Of course, the most important prerequisite for all this is that Kane himself is willing to leave Bayern and join United.
